Update on SOLO:The SOLO training day recently attended by four Westbrook staff members was very informative. Essentially, it 'unpacked' the next step for our students. The message from Julie Mills, in a nutshell, is to USE THE CONCEPT MAPS to move students on from one level to another. If we set a multistructural task, the outcome will only ever be multistructural, so push them to progress. At future meetings, we can go over more - but for today, we will cover the Define and Describe maps. Feedback from Pam.
Julie is in Rotorua again in August for another training day. We have asked that the possibility of more staff attending be explored, but with five schools in the Cluster, each school would like more to attend and we then end up with a packed course (like January).
The ICT PD Cluster meeting here at Westbrook last week went well. Two points relating to SOLO came out of that meeting. The first was that we need to make sure that any SOLO symbols/rubrics used are marked as being the property of Julie Mills and Pam Hook (Matua Nicholas is in the process labelling our symbols around the school in the appropriate manner). They are more than happy that we use them, as long as we attribute them back to Hooked-on-Thinking. Secondly, we need to ensure that student teachers and/or others do not take SOLO templates etc away from the school as they are the intellectual property of Julie and Pam.
Sharing Time Let's start with some discussion centred around the websites we looked at during the last meeting on 5 May. Which sites did you check out? Can you see yourself using them in the future? This week: Andrea on EduGlog, and Robyn on WildSelf.
